Mansfield — Eastern Connecticut State University advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series by defeating Rowan (N.J.) 3-2 on Saturday to sweep its best-of-three sub regional softball series.

The Warriors won the opener 2-1 on Friday. Jackie Lewis, a senior second baseman from Fitch, had one of the key hits in Game 1, breaking a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

Eastern (34-11), a perfect 9-0 in the postseason, will begin play in the national tournament on Thursday in Tyler, Texas. The Warriors will be joined by a second New England school, Williams College, which swept its sub regional series against Ithaca College.

Baseball

• UConn's late rally fell short as Tulane held on for an 8-6 victory on the final day of the American Athletic Conference season. The Huskies (33-22, 12-12), who won 10-6 Friday night took two out of three in the weekend series, head to Clearwater (Fla.) next for the AAC tournament, which begins on Tuesday. UConn will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed in play in the first game of the day at 9 a.m. Tulane (31-24, 12-11) will be either the third or fourth seed, depending on results from Saturday's late games.

The Huskies trailed 8-1 before scoring twice in the eighth and three more in the ninth, getting the go-ahead run to the plate for the Green Wave held on.

Track & field

• Coast Guard Academy will send four athletes to the NCAA Division III Championship starting Thursday in Geneva, Ohio. For the men, junior Zarlengo will compete for the first time in the hammer throw, where he is ranked 20th with a throw of 185 feet, a school record. For the women, sophomores Kaitlyn Mooney and Leilani Salang, and junior Adora Lawrence will all be competing. Salang and Lawrence will both be competing in the nationals for the first time while Mooney will be returning for the second straight year. Mooney is entered in the 5K, where she is ranked fifth with a time of 16 minutes, 49.40 seconds and won the national title indoors in 16:23.12. Salang is ranked fifth in the discus (154-10), a school record, while Lawrence is ranked 20th in at 400 meters (56.99), also a school record.

• Connecticut College will be represent by a pair of athletes, Shannon Kennedy and Koko Mensah. Kennedy, a senior, will compete in the two-day heptathlon for the first time in her career. She is ranked No. 10 nationally after setting a school record with 4,625 points at last weekend's Open New England meet in New Haven. Mensah, a junior, will compete in the shot put for the second year in a row as the No. 5 seed with a school-record throw of 47-3.
