    Local roundup: ECC girls' basketball tourney begins on Wednesday

    The 2020 Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' basketball tournament begins on Wednesday with three first-round games.

    In Division I, ninth-seeded Ledyard visits No. 8 Woodstock Academy at 5 p.m., and in Division II, No. 7 Lyman Memorial hosts No. 10 Tourtellotte and No. 9 St. Bernard is at No. 8 Plainfield, both at 6 p.m.

    The three winners advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played on Thursday at the sites of the higher-ranked teams, while Norwich Free Academy will host semifinal games on Saturday (Division II at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Division I at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.), and a championship doubleheader will be played for the first time at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 and 8 p.m.

    The title games will be streamed live on theday.com.

    NFA is the top seed in Division I and Putnam is the No. 1 seed in Division II.

    NFA earned the No. 1 seed over New London in Division I by lot. The two teams shared the regular-season title and had perfect records playing against their ECC-mandated schedules, but NFA got the tiebreaking nod for seeding purposes based on beating a higher seed in the CIAC Class LL rankings (the Wildcats beat Newtown, currently No. 3).

    In other girls' basketball news:

    • Sam Gray scored seven of her 21 points in overtime as Old Lyme beat Amistad 44-43. Emily DeRoehn scored Old Lyme's other five points in overtime, including going 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. DeRoehn finished with 14 points and five rebounds and Gray had five rebounds for Old Lyme (12-7).

    • Olivia Kaplan scored 17 points as Williams School outlasted Providence Country Day 45-33. Anna Mae Saunders added 15 points for the Blues (5-8) and Mary Surprenant finished with seven.

    • Samantha Money made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points as Ledyard rolled to a 49-13 victory over Lyman Memorial on Monday night. Clair Inyang added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Colonels (5-15) while Tallie Williams finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

    Boys' basketball

    • Old Lyme, which made its debut in the GameTimeCT.com/New Haven Register poll on Monday at No. 10, continued to dominate the Shoreline Conference with a 71-55 victory over Hale-Ray. Aedan Using had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (16-1) while Ray Doll had 11 points, five assists and four steals and Jared Ritchie added 14 points.

    • Ledyard lost to Woodstock Academy 70-66 in an ECC Division II game. Dorell Cagle scored 22 points for Ledyard (10-8, 3-5).

    • Freshman Cedric Similien scored 20 points as St. Bernard closed out ECC Division III play with a 60-50 win over Plainfield. Tyson Wheeler, also a freshman, scored 14 and Frank Pacheco had 10 points for the Saints (13-6, 7-10.

    • Bowen Baker scored 14 points during Wheeler's 54-33 loss to Lyman Memorial in an ECC Division IV game. The Lions are 9-9, 3-5. Zach Dunnack led Lyman with 15.

    Men's basketball

    • Waterford's Trevor Yeomans scored 22 points to help lead Avery Point to a 90-78 win over Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in a NJCAA Region 21 game. J.R. Gandenberger of East Lyme scored 16 and Tyler Zegray had 10 points for Avery Point (15-12, 12-6).

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Packy Witkowski was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Witkowski led the Bears to a pair of wins last week, averaging 28.5 points per-game while shooting 54.1% from the floor and 72.2% after three-point range (13-for-18). He scored 32 points in a 108-93 win over MIT and 25 more in an 80-64 road win over Clark.

    • UConn announced redshirt freshman forward Akok Akok underwent successful surgery early to repair the ruptured left Achilles tendon he suffered in Sunday's game against Memphis. He is expected to return to campus on Wednesday, where his recovery and rehabilitation will be monitored by the UConn medical and athletic training staff.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College led 43-25 at halftime and went on to beat Dean 92-64 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Kelsey Hernandez had 24 points and five assists, Amina Wiley had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Sam McKenna scored 15 and Le'Sandra Turner had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Mariners (14-9, 9-3).

    • UConn Avery Point is ranked No. 13 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll. The Pointers (15-8) have won three games in a row and have been ranked as high as 10 this season. The visit Gateway Community College on Thursday.
