    Local roundup: Ledyard girls win ECC Division I tournament opener

    Woodstock — Tallie Williams made a basket with four seconds remaining to give ninth-seeded Ledyard a 31-30 victory over No. 8 Woodstock Academy in the first round of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I girls' basketball tournament on Wednesday night.

    The Colonels (6-15) will play at top-seeded Norwich Free Academy in Thursday's quarterfinals at 6 p.m.

    Williams finished with 14 points and six steals Ledyard while Tajeah Winston added eight points and eight rebounds.

    Alexa Pechie scored 11 points for Woodstock (7-14) and Katie Papp had 11 rebounds.

    In other games:

    • No. 8 Plainfield jumped out to a 9-0 lead and went on to beat No. 9 St. Bernard 47-35 in a first round game in the ECC Division II tournament. Sophia Boras had 15 points and Lindsey Clement scored nine for the Saints (7-14). Plainfield plays at top-seeded Putnam in Thursday's quarterfinals at 6 p.m.

    • Old Lyme wrapped up its regular season with a 47-31 win over Portland in a Shoreline Conference. Emily DeRoehn had 19 points and eight rebounds and Sam Gray scored 14 for the Wildcats (13-7, 10-5). Old Lyme in the No. 5 seed in the Shoreline tournament at plays at No. 4 Coginchaug in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. 

    • Williams School won for the second time in as many days, beating Fishers Island 38-33. Olivia Kaplan led the Blues (6-8) with 21 points, including six 3-pointers.

    • Norwich Tech closed out its regular season with a 38-27 win over Hale-Ray in a nonleague game. Geovanna Taitague scored 16 points and had seven steals, Joharys Perez-Rivera scored 10 and Ashlyn Bill had nine rebounds for the Warriors (11-9).

    Boys' basketball

    • Bernard Hawkins and Eddie Reyes-Suarez combined to go 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final minute as Montville held off Bacon Academy 48-45. Hawkins finished with 13 points and five steals for the Indians (14-4) while Antonio Brown added 12 points 12 rebounds and Reyes-Suarez finished with nine rebounds and seven assists. Nick Tiziani scored 22 points for Bacon (6-14), including six 3-pointers.

    • Yaniel Hernandez had 15 points and 10 rebounds as Fitch beat Stonington 49-48 to finish unbeaten in ECC Division II play. Ajia Brown scored 17 for Fitch (16-3, 8-0). Stonington is 9-10, 4-4.

    Men's basketball

    • Chris Manon had 21 points and six rebounds at St. Thomas More defeated Bridgton Academy 102-76. Elijah Perry added 10 ponts, seven assists and six rebounds for the Chancellors while Keigo Kimura scored 15 points and Jair Currie had 13.

    • Packy Witkowski scored a game-high 26 points to lead Coast Guard to a 101-78 win over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Witkowski, the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week, has scored 25 or more points in all six games this month.

    Jack Brunswick added a career-high 11 points off the bench, Tyler Perez scored 11 points, Jason Frazer had 10 points off the bench, Justin Kane had eight rebounds and Garrett Drummond had five assists for Coast Guard (10-3, 5-8). Coast Guard can clinch its first NEWMAC tournament berth since 2011 with a win over Emerson in the regular season finale at home on Saturday or with a WPI win over MIT.

    • Mitchell College lost to Elms 66-63 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Malik Chase scored 16 points, Hasani Williams had 10 points and seven rebounds and Leonard Williams had 10 points and five steals for Mitchell (10-15, 7-5).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Freshman Gianna Cascio had three goals and three assists as Coast Guard opened its season with a 14-4 victory over Johnson & Wales in New London. The Bears led 5-0 at halftime and 8-0 in the second half on the way to an easy win. Etta Davis and Catarina Goncalves added three goals apiece for Coast Guard while Maddie Rizzuto added a goal and three assists, Haley Howard scored twice, Haley McCue had a goal and two assists and Mary Ellis Goins had a goal and one assist.

    H.S. hockey

    • The Eastern CT Eagles lost to the Lyman Hall co-op 5-4 in overtime. With the goalie pulled, Evan Tower of the Eagles scored with 19 seconds left in the third period to send the game to overtime. Matt Pettit's overtime goal gave Lyman Hall the win.

    Cade Waters had two goals and an assist, Tower had a goal and an assist, Miles Hinkley had two assists, Steve Turchetta scored, Rylin Fowler made 39 saves and Will Cannella and Ryan LoVetere had assists for the Eagles (8-9).
