    Local roundup: Ledyard gets off to a fast start, holds off Stonington in ECC boys' tournament

    Ledyard — Ledyard High School jumped out to a 30-9 lead after one quarter and went on to beat Stonington 77-70 in a quarterfinal in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys' basketball tournament Thursday night.

    Jabari Jones scored 13 of his 21 points in the first quarter for No. 3 Ledyard (13-8). Omar Whitmore had 16 points and Dorell Cagle and Elijah Morton scored 10 points each for the Colonels. Dorian White led No. 6 Stonington with 20 points, Adyen Morrison scored 18 and Jadon Perez had 15 points for the Bears (10-11).

    Ledyard plays No. 2 Fitch in Saturday's semifinal at Waterford at 4 p.m., followed by NFA against No. 2 Waterford at 6 p.m. NFA beat No. 8 Woodstock 73-43. In Division II, No. 2 Griswold plays No. 6 Plainfield at noon, while No. 1 St. Bernard plays No. 4 Killingly at 2 p.m. 

    In other games:

    • Tyson Wheeler scored 16 points to help lead St. Bernard to a 78-48 win over No. 9 Windham in an ECC Division II tournament quarterfinal. Nathaniel Avery and Frank Pacheco had 13 points each and Cedrick Similien scored 12 for the Saints (14-7).

    • Plainfield led 26-13 at halftime and held on to beat No. 3 Montville 51-46 in an ECC Division II quarterfinal. Lucien Dube and Connor Abram scored 12 points each for Plainfield. Zach Southard led Montville (14-7) with 13 points and teammate Antonio Brown scored 12.

    • Scott Pion (13), Lukas Jones (11) and Ian Spracklin (10) all scored in double figures for Wheeler in a 62-50 loss to Griswold in the ECC Division II quarterfinals. Bowen Baker added 10 rebounds and five assists for Wheeler (11-11). CJ Mattson had 18 points to lead Griswold.

    • Old Lyme's Aedan Using, Waterford's Ryan O'Connell, Fitch's Ajia Brown and Norwich Free Academy's Xavier Marquez were selected to play in the 45th Annual Connecticut High School Coaches' Association Boys' Basketball All-Star Festival on March 25 at The Morgan School.

    Teams Constitution (Using) and Charter Oak (Brown), featuring players from Divisions 3, 4 and 5, will face off at 5:45 p.m., followed by a matchup between teams Mohegan (O'Connell) and Pequot (Marquez), with players from Divisions 1 and 2, at 7:15 p.m. Admission to the doubleheader is $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell College advanced to the New England Collegiate Conference tournament final with a 73-69 win over No. 3 Eastern Nazarene. No. 2 Mitchell (12-14) plays at No. 1 New England College in Saturday's final. Matt Finke scored 18 points and Malik Chase had 17 points and six rebounds for Mitchell.

    Women's basketball

    • Rene Hudson scored 36 points as No. 2 New England College beat No. 3 Mitchell College 79-75 in the NECC tournament semifinals. Kelsey Hernandez scored 22 points, Le'Sandra Turner had 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, Amina Wiley had 13 points and eight rebounds and Sam McKenna scored 10 for Mitchell (16-11).  

    Men's lacrosse

    • Riley McNulty scored five goals as Coast Guard beat RPI 16-14 in a nonleague game on Wednesday. Matty Johnson had three goals and Will Iorio and Taylor Gustafson each scored twice for Coast Guard (2-1).

    H.S. hockey

    • The Eastern Connecticut Eagles came away with their first tie of the season, playing E.O. Smith/Tolland to a 2-2 deadlock Wednesday night. Steve Turchetta and Evan Power had a goal and an assist each and Rylin Fowler made 11 saves for the Eagles (9-9-1).

    College swimming 

    • Coast Guard freshman Taylor Young has qualified for the NCAA Division III Diving Regional at Springfield College on Friday. Young scored a 413.85 and placed seventh at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championships to earn the automatic spot at the regional.
