    Local roundup: Hage, Waterford girls' tennis advance in Class M tournament

    Waterford — Sarah Hage won her No. 1 singles match and the No. 3 doubles team of Ella Briggs and Bre Kilcomons clinched the victory as the 13th-seeded Waterford High School girls' tennis team edged No. 20 Lauralton Hall 4-3 Friday in the qualifying round of the Class M state tournament.

    Michelle Liu won at No. 3 singles and Ava Tinnerello at No. 4 singles for Waterford (11-5), which will play a first-round match at No. 4 Watertown on Tuesday.

    Hage, the Eastern Connecticut Conference singles champion, defeated Lauralton's Audrey Ulrich 6-1, 6-1.

    In other matches:

    • No. 16 St. Bernard topped No. 17 Abbott Tech 5-2 in the qualifying round of the Class S state tournament. The Saints (7-7) advanced to the first round to take on top-seeded Old Lyme on Tuesday.

    • No. 17 Naugatuck edged No. 16 Norwich Free Academy 4-3 in the qualifying round of the Class LL state tournament. NFA senior co-captain Shayla Roche claimed the Wildcats' lone singles win at No. 4 and they got doubles victories from the No. 2 team of Katie Lavoie and Joanna Wu and the No. 3 team of Gabrielle McLead and Carina Moreno. McLead and Moreno defeated Naugatuck's Amy Morrissey and Jade Rodriguez 4-6, 6-4, 13-11. NFA finished 8-8.

    • Reanna Robbins won at No. 3 singles for Ledyard in the Colonels' 6-1 loss to Jonathan Law in the qualifying round of the Class M state tournament. Ledyard finished the season 8-8.

    Boys' tennis

    • Ledyard, the No. 12 seed in the Class S state tournament, blanked No. 21 Windsor Locks 7-0 in the qualifying round. Julian Mileski, Matt Bourguignon, Damion DePaul and Malloch Allison won singles matches, with Allison earning a forfeit at No. 4. The teams of Ronan Allison and Ben Fieldsend, Noah Freeman and Sebastian Fieldsend and Dominic Thomas and Tyler Howard won doubles matches. The Colonels (10-5) moved on to meet No. 5 Shepaug Valley in the first round Tuesday. Mileski defeated Leo Ye 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

    Boys' lacrosse

    • Nolan Brown scored in overtime to lead No. 15 NFA to a 14-13 win over No. 18 Hall in the qualifying round of the Class L tournament. The Wildcats (10-7) play at No. 2 Staples in the first round on Wednesday. Logan Jenkins had five goals and an assist, Quinn Perkins scored three goals, Brown had three goals and an assist, Sam Sweeney made 18 saves, Anthony Ballestrini had two goals and three assists, Conor Gaughan had a goal and an assist and Tommy Brunelli had an assist for NFA.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • Alice Rourke scored six goals in No. 22 NFA's 15-6 victory over No. 11 Bristol Central in the qualifying round of the Class L state tournament. Lauren Friedrich had five goals and three assists, Molly Page three goals and three assists and Jayna Neault one goal for the Wildcats (8-9), which will play a first-round game at No. 6 South Windsor on Tuesday. Sophia Smith made six saves for NFA.

    • Elaina Brookhart finished with 11 saves in goal in No. 14 Fitch's 20-8 victory over No. 19 Jonathan Law in the qualifying round of the Class M state tournament. Twelve different players recorded points for the Falcons (11-8), who moved on to meet No. 3 Wethersfield in the first round Tuesday. Rita Sefransky led Fitch with three goals and four assists, Bridget O'Leary had a goal and four assists and Allison Sousa, Sophia Clang and Madison Corbeil had three goals each. Senior defender Kara Moriarty scored her first career varsity goal.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard Academy junior Caleb Holdridge of Waterford was named an honorable mention All-America selection by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and an honorable mention All-New England pick by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA). He earned both those honors for the second straight season.

    Holdridge led the Bears with 48 goals, 45 assists and 93 points. The 45 assists were a single-season program record and second-most in the NEWMAC this season, while his 48 goals and 93 points were both second-most in a season at Coast Guard.

    He has also been a two-time All-NEWMAC first team selection.

    College softball

    • No. 6 Trine University defeated No. 3 Eastern Connecticut State 4-2 in eight innings Friday morning in the continuation of a game halted Thursday in a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, the opening game for both teams in the Division III World Series in Salem, Va. Trine won when Taylor Murdock hit her team-leading seventh home run of the year with one on and nobody out in the top of the eighth. Eastern (43-6) fell into the losers' bracket of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament and will take on No. 7 Millikin (37-8) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Montville graduate Alexis Michon doubled for Eastern and Fitch grad Cassie Woods was credited with a sacrifice bunt to help fuel the team's two-run third inning.
