    Consumers Interstate buys Niantic firm

Norwich — Business-supplies distributor Consumers Interstate Corp. has announced the acquisition of Niantic-based New London Tape Distribution Co. for an undisclosed price.

New London Tape, which specializes in the distribution of industrial tape and janitorial supplies, is a second-generation, family run company founded in 1957 by Samuel Elkin. It is currently run by Elkin’s two sons, Jeffrey and Ronald, and has headquarters at 27 Hope St.

Consumers Interstate, like New London Tape run by a second-generation owner, Kenn Fischburg, was founded by Jack Fischburg in 1947. Kenn assumed the company leadership role in 1974 after his father’s death, and his daughter Jessica joined the firm in 2008.

Consumers Interstate’s acquisition of New London Tape was to be officially announced Tuesday, Fischburg said in a phone interview.

“It’s a good company, and we are good friends,” Fischburg said. “It’s amazing now that we will be one big family.”

John Twomey, president of Consumers Interstate, said New London Tape’s expertise in packaging tapes, janitorial and paper supplies would be combined with Consumers Interstate’s leading-edge Internet procurement solutions to “dramatically” benefit both firms’ customer bases.

Consumers Interstate, headquartered at the Norwich Industrial Park, currently distributes more than 300,000 products across the United States and into Mexico.

In January, the firm announced a multimillion-dollar upgrade to its online ordering portal, www.SuperSupplies.com. The company’s main website is www.Cicgo.com.
