Linen company workers compete to get in shape

Norwich – Employees of the ACLS New England commercial laundry company in the city's business park are competing with their counterparts at the company's three other facilities in Atlantic City to become the "biggest losers."

Four teams, one from each facility, are competing from May 17 to July 12 to lose weight and get in shape, said Judy Blakely, human resources generalist for ACLS New England in Norwich.

Throughout the contest, ACLS is offering employees yoga, free gym membership at Summit Gym, a chiropractor and a nutritionist that will come on site and talk about how to eat healthy on a budget. All participants received health screenings at the beginning of the contest, provided by Summit Health, coordinated by Amerihealth Administrators and Innovative Risk Solutions.

Prizes will be awarded to employees who lose the most weight. In addition, there will be a raffle at the contest's conclusion where an individual's chances to win will be based on how often they visited the gym. Raffle prizes include gym memberships and gift cards.

The ACLS facility whose employees lose the highest weight percentage will win a special prize. Last year, the company's winning contestant lost 46 pounds, Blakely said.

"The goal is to get healthy, educate, and have fun," Blakely said.
