Suffolk Downs commits to continue horse racing

Boston (AP) — Construction of a casino at Suffolk Downs won't mean an end to thoroughbred racing at the facility, officials say.

The track has committed in writing to continue horse racing for at least 15 years if Mohegan Sun gets the go-ahead to build a casino on track property in Revere.

The commitment made in a letter this week to the Massachusetts gambling commission is an attempt to address concerns that the Mohegan Sun proposal does not legally require racing to continue at the last thoroughbred track in New England, which has lost an estimated $47 million since 2007.

The Boston Globe obtained a copy of the letter.

If Revere voters endorse the Mohegan Sun plan, it will compete with a proposal by Wynn Resorts for Everett. The commission's decision is expected in May.
