EB awarded $64 million contract modification for submarine overhaul work
Groton — The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Electric Boat a $64 million modification to an existing contract for the overhaul of the USS Hartford (SSN-768), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine.
On Friday, the department issued a “Smart Start” modification to a $125 million contract awarded last August.
The Hartford had arrived at the shipyard the previous day.
“Overhaul and repair work is vitally important to EB because it allows us to manage ebbs and flows in the workload associated with the Virginia and Columbia programs, and enables our workforce to maintain proficiency in crucial skills,” Kevin Graney, EB’s president, said in a statement. “Smart Start on the Hartford is the right approach to maintain and modernize the ship and get it back to the fleet.”
The maintenance, repair and modernization work on the Hartford is expected to be completed by February 2022.
Graney, in a message to employees, noted the Hartford, now docked at the Groton waterfront, joins three Virginia-class attack submarines docked at the south end of the yard: USS South Dakota (SSN-790) and USS Delaware (SSN-791), both here for Post Shakedown Availability work, and USS Vermont (SSN-792), which is undergoing work prior to sea trials.
Graney reported that EB has achieved several construction milestones at the Groton yard, including the completion May 27 of the structural deck of the South Yard Assembly Building. Construction on the building began last week.
EB plans to break ground this month on Building 604, which will house EB’s Radiological Emergency Response Team, locally based Naval Reactors personnel and the Emergency Command Center. That building is scheduled to be complete in late 2022.
