Dear Readers,

As most of you know The Day is a locally owned and operated independent media company, part of a vanishing breed in the rest of the United States. We are dedicated to delivering local, independent, reliable, and accountable journalism.

The Day is owned by a split-interest trust, which operates the company and supports the Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation. This arrangement ensures that the newspaper will remain independent and that profits from the newspaper will be distributed to non-profit organizations that help needy children, families, individuals and support the arts. Since its inception, the foundation has distributed more than $12 million.

The past year has been a challenging one for the newspaper industry. We have seen a continuing decline in advertising revenue, and we have countered that decline by offering local businesses digital advertising and marketing solutions.

While national newspaper chains have experienced massive layoffs in 2022, we have managed to keep our company and newsroom largely intact.

The newsroom produced some ground breaking coverage on the important issue of affordable housing through our publicly funded Housing Solutions Lab. We continued our outstanding coverage of local high school sports in print with photos, videos and live streaming of boys’ and girls’ sports. We held two job fairs last year, as well as a girls volleyball tournament and boys basketball tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Our local columnist, David Collins, provided outstanding watchdog journalism around the development of the State Pier. Using the Freedom of Information Act and investigative journalism, his coverage in the past two years has led to FBI and grand jury investigations, both of which are still pending.

It is important that we have the courage to expose wrongdoing, to gather and share information that others might want to keep quiet or out of the public spotlight. Our job is to ensure that freedom of information is not just an expression, but a mission to keep our community informed. We work to get information that you would not otherwise see.
