    Railroad pedestrian fatalities in Connecticut

Two pedestrians were killed by trains in Connecticut in the last 24 hours. The first one occurred yesterday afternoon in Fairfield when a 32-year-old man walked on the the tracks and lay down. He was struck and killed by a Metro-North train.

The second man, a 31-year-old from Groton, was killed yesterday evening when he was struck by an Amtrak Acela Express train just east of New London.

We pulled data from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis to see how many of these incidents (referred to as trespasser casualties by the FRA) have occurred in Connecticut since 2001. The following graph shows year-by-year fatalities for various railroad companies that operate in Connecticut. According to the data, 2014 saw a 300% increase from the previous year.
