    Search for the German U-Boat-550, the History and Technology

    The Waterford Public Library hosts a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17. Garry Kozak, a specialist in undersea sonar searches, will discuss a German U-boat torpedoed that an American tanker off the coast of Nantucket in 1944. There were 44 casualties, and 12 survivors. The prisoners of war, and the survivors of the American tanker, were taken to Great Britain and the location of the sub remained a mystery for nearly 70 years.

    A privately funded group was organized by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani and has been searching for years. On the second trip in a two year span to the site by the team, some of whom had been searching for the lost U-boat for two decades. Kozak discovered the sub. Kozak, with over 35 years of experience in the underwater technology field, is respected worldwide for his knowledge in side scan sonars. He has extensive hands-on experience with numerous sonar platforms and has traveled the globe performing underwater surveys. He is employed by Edgetech in Wareham,Mass., which designs, develops and manufactures products, instruments and systems for the acquisition of underwater data including the Side Scan Sonar and X-Star Sub-Bottom Profiler.
