New London — Charlie Coiro was named the Leadership Development Center’s Instructor of the Year for 2012 to 2013.

Capt. Andrea Marcille, the center’s commander, presented Coiro with the award during the ceremony to establish the LDC as a command, Thursday, Aug. 29.

Coiro is an assistant branch chief for leadership and organizational performance. From 2012 to 2013, he taught more than 400 students in nine different courses and helped develop the Mid-Grade Officer Career Transition Course.

“During his tenure spreading leadership goodness throughout the Coast Guard, Charlie has personally trained over 6,000 students. If you think about the direct reports of those 6,000 students, Charlie has influenced the leadership experience of over 20,000 members of the Coast Guard,” Marcille said. “By his example and influence, Mr. Coiro is not just this year’s Instructor of the Year, he is the award’s hallmark.”

Marcille also praised Coiro for helping create and engage the Coast Guard’s leadership community by always encouraging the concepts of coaching and individual mentoring, conducting leadership and strategic planning workshops, pioneering techniques on blended learning, and coaching and mentoring other instructors, consultants, students and cadets.

Coiro said it was an honor to be recognized among the outstanding group of people at the center.

“One of the key concepts we teach leaders is to appreciate and ‘encourage the hearts’ of the people you work with,” Coiro said. “Capt. Marcille is an excellent role model in this regard. The fact that she took the time to recognize me on this very important day for the LDC made it very special.”
