New London native assumes command of Navy fighter squadron

New London — A New London native assumed command of Strike Fighter Squadron 11, VFA-11, a Navy fighter squadron at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va.

Cmdr. Joshua Sager relieved Cmdr. Marcus Lopez as the commanding officer of the squadron Thursday, Oct. 10, and became the 77th commanding officer of the Red Rippers.

Sager has been flying FA-18s since he earned his Wings of Gold in 1997 and has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and nearly 800 carrier arrested landings in support of Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He reported to the Red Rippers as the squadron’s executive officer in August 2012.
