Filardis' series, based on Stephen King story, premieres Aug. 22

Set your DVRs for the latest television work from the Filardi brothers, who grew up in Mystic.

Peter Filardi, whose screenwriting credits include the 1990 movie "Flatliners" and the 1996 movie "The Craft," and Jason Filardi, who wrote "17 Again" (2009) and "Bringing Down the House" (2003), are showrunners on a new adaptation of Stephen King's short story "Jerusalem's Lot."

The 10-episode series, titled "Chapelwaite," debuts at 10 p.m. Aug. 22 on Epix.

Filmed in Nova Scotia, the production stars Adrien Brody, who won an Oscar for "The Pianist," and Emily Hampshire, who played Stevie on "Schitt's Creek."

In the 1850s, a ship captain's wife dies at sea. He moves with their children to his foreboding ancestral home. As the plot summary from Epix notes, the captain (played by Brody) "will soon have to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history, and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations." Hampshire plays a writer who becomes the family's governess.

The main character is a whaling captain in the series, a change from the original King story. Jason Filardi told The Day in an interview in November 2020, “My brother and I have always been intrigued by the whaling industry because of Mystic and Mystic Seaport." He said they made the character here a whaling captain “because we loved the history of Mystic. For years and years, we’ve talked about wanting to do a New England story together, and of course, we’ve always hoped it would shoot in Mystic. But this was really our chance to do that. You’ll probably recognize a lot of familiar Mystic-type names (including Denison and Morgan) when you watch it.”
