Finnish modern rock delivers masterpiece

War is Over
The Von Hertzen Brothers
As someone who spends an embarrassingly large amount of time seeking out new music, I'm even more humiliated to just discover Finnish band the Von Hertzen Brothers. Turns out they've released seven studio albums in a little over a decade, and "War is Over," which came out late last year, is magnificent, with elements of Muse, Queen, Foo Fighters, Anathema and Opeth crashing majestically against one another — and yet VHB are instantly identifiable unto themselves. The 12-minute title track should be one of those "Supper's Ready" or "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" anthems. Maybe it will happen. With a bit of research, I've learned the longer "epic" track is the sort of thing the Von Hertzens do really well as per songs from earlier in their career such as "Bring Out the Sun (So Alive)" and "Kiss a Wish." Find these siblings now.
