Kevin Bishop is the New London Community Orchestra’s music director. (Submitted)

The New London Community Orchestra will present a “Messages of Peace” concert on Sunday featuring instrumental and choral works “that convey the shared yearning for world peace during the holiday season,” according to the group.

The show will include compositions from Afghanistan and Ukraine and works by Tchaikovsky, Handel, Corelli and Bloch.

The Stella Maris Choir and Coro Hispano, groups based at St. Mary Church, will perform choral works.

It all culminates with holiday numbers, including “The Hallelujah Chorus” with audience participation.

NLCO’s music director is Kevin Bishop, who has a wide-ranging background as a violist, violinist, conductor, composer, educator, researcher and arts administrator. His “creative pursuits have taken him around the world to study, witness, engage with and lead social music and recording projects alongside silenced, persecuted and underrepresented musicians,” according to NLCO. Among his many efforts, he conducted the first all-female orchestra in Afghanistan for the World Economic Forum.

New London Community Orchestra, 4 p.m. Sunday, St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington St., New London; while admission is free, a $10 donation is requested, with all proceeds going to support the Music City Strings program of free string instrument lessons for New London youth that the orchestra sponsors.
