Providence, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island National guard may not be taking part in Columbus Day weekend parades and community events.

Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Parente tells The Providence Journal the Guard hasn't cancelled any appearances yet, but the partial federal shutdown means there may not be money to pay them for the ceremonial duty.

Parente said there have been plans to attend about dozen parades and events, including the annual Columbus Day parade in Providence's Federal Hill neighborhood.

He said it's a busy time of year for requests for parades, color guards and honor guards.

Parente said more than 400 "military technicians" were called back Monday after being furloughed Oct. 1, rejoining 300 full-time active-duty members who have remained on the job.

Last weekend's monthly training exercise was cancelled, meaning guard members didn't get paid for that.
