NJ Lt. gov.: Aid-for-development claim false

Trenton, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's lieutenant governor denies that Superstorm Sandy relief funding was withheld from a severely flooded city because the mayor wouldn't sign off on a politically connected real estate venture.

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno says Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer's claim is "false" and "illogical."

Guadagno made her statement Monday at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Union Beach, the day before Gov. Chris Christie's inaugural.

Zimmer said Saturday that she and Guadagno had a conversation in May in which the lieutenant governor made it clear that Hoboken's storm recovery funds hinged on Zimmer's approval of a commercial development whose lawyer and lobbyist are close to the governor.

On Sunday, Zimmer said the ultimatum was delivered on behalf of the governor, a possible 2016 GOP presidential candidate.
