A second midshipman dies at Naval Academy

For the second time in two weeks, the U.S. Naval Academy has been rocked by the death of a midshipman. The academy announced Friday it was "deeply saddened" to confirm a midshipman was found unresponsive in Bancroft Hall, the school's dormitory, on Thursday evening.

Officials said foul play was not suspected and that the cause of death was under investigation.

In the statement, officials said midshipmen, faculty and staff on the campus were told of the death Friday morning, and counseling services were being offered.

News of the latest death spread quickly through campus Friday. The academy did not name the midshipman pending notification of relatives, but friends and classmates began posting tributes on social media. Many were accompanied by prayers and condolences for his family.

The academy was still reeling from the death of Duke Carrillo, 21, of Flower Mound, Texas, who collapsed Feb. 9 during a portion of the Navy's semiannual physical readiness test. Carrillo was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Carrillo was a quantitative economics major and a member of the academy's flight training squadron. His brothers, Dylan and Jake, are Naval Academy midshipmen.

Vice Adm. Sean Buck, 63rd Superintendent of the Naval Academy, called Carrillo's death a "sudden and tragic loss."

The cause of Carrillo's death has not been determined.
