    Get the look you want

As our population ages, more of our attention has turned to the improvement of our appearance, and in particular, the aging skin syndrome. Age, coupled with the ravages of our environment, including sum damage, can lead to dryness, discoloration and wrinkles in both women and men. When you add in the genetically determined effects of aging, such as thinning of the skin, loss of fat and collagen for support, then it is easy to understand the dramatic changes that can occur. Although many refuse to acknowledge it, the loss of natural protection that

we once had from the ozone layer (compromised by industrial use of automation and ignorance) has an important role to play in the aging effect. When we consult with patients, we explain this in detail to be sure you understand how all of the above impacts the layers of your skin.

Surface changes cause pigment variations in all of us, such as redness or aggregations of melanin such as melasma. The skin can also take on a dull, ashen look that may make us look less vital. There can be skin lesions, such as actinic keratosis, that proliferate over time and are thought to be pre-cancerous in some circles. Additionally, vascular changes, such as telangiectasias, commonly called spider veins, are more prominent as we age. At The Center for Facial Cosmetics, we discuss detrimental habits that may include exposure and use of tobacco products, sun exposure and nutrition. We also take into consideration genetic history, skin type and medical history. With this information we are able to make appropriate recommendations for treatment of the areas of immediate concern as well as make recommendations for proactive long term approach to skin care. We offer time proven products from Neocutis, Obagi and others to help diminish the effects of the environment and aging process on the skin of the face and neck.

The ideal skin care regimen includes using a deep cleanser to remove impurities while preserving the natural beneficial oils. Next, we recommend using a moisturizer to add hydration, exfoliate and tone the skin, and to protect the skin. Many products are created for specific skin types, as one size does not fit all. We also offer Retinol (Retin A, Renova) and in some cases, we will recommend a more aggressive skin treatment such as microdermabrasion or a chemical peel, which provides a deeper exfoliation of the skin.

Wrinkles that occur between the eyes, the forehead, the crow's feet and other frown lines not reduced by topical skin care products are easily treated with small injections of neurotoxins, placed into the muscles, causing the wrinkles to relax, leading to an overall smoother appearance. Botox® and Xeomin® are two products commonly used in these areas. This is not a permanent solution, but the benefits are usually seen for three to six months and patients are pleased with this type of rejuvenation.

Deeper wrinkles not amenable to the use of neurotoxins are often treated with injectable agents such as Radiesse®, Juvederm®, Restylane® Silk and Belotero®. These FDA approved agents are among the most common cosmetic treatments in the world. They can be used to fill in wrinkles or scars, facial depressions, and can be used to contour the face by enhancing cheek bones and filling in deep lines between the nose and lip. They also provide pleasing results for fine lines of the lips, often seen in smokers, and for lip enhancement. These products can last from three months to over a year, depending on the agent use and the way your body responds to the ingredients. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in our body that supports the skin and these products help replenish the collage lost due to age and environmental factors. Hyaluronic acid has the longest lasting effect, but results vary among patients.
