A new gallery in the heart of Mystic is giving an international flavor to the community’s vibrant art scene.

Curated, featuring fine art and luxury goods from around the globe, opened on April 1. The gallery is located in a newly renovated 1,100-square-foot space at 29 West Main Street.

Pamela Stone-Duggan, who owns Curated with her husband Peter Duggan, says the couple have collected the items for sale in the gallery from a wide variety of sources in the United States, throughout Europe, and in other parts of the world. They have also developed personal relationships with painters, sculptors, jewelers, and other skilled artists and artisans.

Featuring an eclectic collection of unique objects, the gallery houses evocative watercolor and ballpoint pen artwork from Samuel Austin of Boulder, Colorado; impressionist figure paintings by Andre Kohn of Scottsdale, Arizona; intricate works by Italian contemporary sculptor Paola Grizi; and jewelry from Susan Cummings of Ojai, California, whose pieces have been sold through venues such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Crossbow Leather of Santa Barbara, Calif., collaborated in providing custom designed leather bags for the collection. Curated also features vintage Moroccan Boujad and Boucherouite rugs, leather jewelry from Spain, and the softest woolen goods from Peter’s hometown in Galway, Ireland.

Pamela says she looks for artwork and luxury items that show sophistication, a warm design, highly skilled craftsmanship, and a fun sense of adventure. She says Curated will feature a mix of world-renowned artists and support up-and-coming new artists.

“People will be able to walk into Curated and just be wowed everywhere they look, and want to live in the gallery,” she says.

Pamela has been involved in marketing, public relations, and design for the fine and performing arts for 12 years. Most recently, she was the marketing and graphic design director for Stanford University ARTS. Her interior design work has been featured in the New York Times, on the cover of Colorado Homes and Lifestyles, and on HGTV. Peter has worked in supply chain management for the high tech industry throughout his professional career.

Visiting Mystic since 2002, the couple recently decided to move there from California. Pamela anticipates the gallery will be an excellent contribution to the “New Mystic,” adding a most unique lifestyle art and shopping experience to the existing exceptional restaurant and luxury boutique hotel scene for visitors from Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York City, Boston, and beyond.

“We wanted to bring all of these incredible, unique, beautiful, and beautifully designed things under

one roof, in a delicious environment,” says Pamela.

All pieces in the gallery will be offered for sale, with a diverse price range offering access to many different people. Pamela estimates that some original art pieces will be available for as low as

$200, while others will have price tags of up to $25,000.

The current collection will remain on display for at least a year. After that point, part of the gallery may be dedicated to a rotating collection which will change over every month or quarter.

The gallery will host periodic events where patrons can meet the artists and artisans over a glass of bubbly, putting a face and personality to the pieces of the collection.

“I think it makes a very big difference when you own a piece of art to know the person behind the art, to know their motivations, their passion, and what makes them tick,” says Pamela. “It creates a lot more value and a stronger attachment in my mind.”

An online shop will feature artist bios and photos of their work. Much of the collection of goods will also be available online, allowing anyone in the world to place an order for a piece in the gallery.

Pamela and Peter are looking to become active members of the community. Already members of the Mystic Chamber of Commerce, Peter is also on the board of the Downtown Mystic Merchants Association.

The grand opening of Curated brought in scads of people from Mystic and surrounding areas, as well as several local businesses for an evening of champagne, food, and music. The Oyster Club provided hors d’oeuvres, The Real McCoy Rum provided tastings, and desserts were supplied by the SIFT Bake Shop.
