    Severe storms strike eastern Connecticut

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory through this afternoon, a result of strong thunderstorms that swept into the region and dropped 1-inch diameter hail in Jewett City on Thursday morning.

The flood advisory is in effect for New London County until early this afternoon because of the possibility of minor flooding in low lying and poor drainage areas.

Gary Lessor, chief meteorologist for the weather center at Western Connecticut State University, said Thursday’s storm was accompanied by gusty winds in some areas. Groton reported wind gusts of 36 miles per hour and 1.19 inches of rain. Much of the rain fell within one hour, Lessor said.

There are some reports on social media of tornadoes touching down in Connecticut but Lessor said the National Weather Service has not confirmed any of those reports.
