    Richard “Dick” Pogue, 91, Madison

Richard “Dick” Pogue, 91, of Madison, died March 24 at the Branford Hospice. He was the loving husband and best friend of the late Margaret (Gross) Pogue. Dick was born on May 8, 1920 in the Bronx, New York, son of the late Richard and Lillian (Ahearn) Pogue.  Dick served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, as well as in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War.  After returning home from the service, he enjoyed careers as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department and, later, in sales with the publisher Prentice-Hall.

After raising their children in Manhattan, Dick and his wife Peggy moved permanently to Point Lookout, New York, in 1977, where they had enjoyed summers at the beach for many years.  In 1998, they relocated to Hobe Sound, Florida, where they spent countless hours enjoying golf, leisure, and family members’ frequent visits.  Failing health brought them to Madison in 2008, where they found a home among the residents of the Hearth at Tuxis Pond.

After his wife’s death in 2010, Dick enjoyed activities at the Hearth, ranging from excursions to the casino to games of pool with his friends and son-in-law, Phil.

Dick will be remembered lovingly by his family for his unwavering love and support of all of their endeavors, his great and newfound affection for the games of soccer and tennis, and for his fanatical support of his New York Giants.

Dick is survived by three daughters,  Jean Carpenter and her husband Roger of Babylon, New York, and Bradenton, Florida; Mary Ellen Purdy of Hobe Sound, Florida; and Peggy Steiner and her husband Phil of Madison. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kerri Tricarico and her husband Michael, Kristin Van Bourgondien and her husband John, and Brendan, Maggie and Will Steiner; three great-grandchildren, Emilie and Ella Van Bourgondien and Jack Tricarico; and two sisters, Elizabeth Pogue of Tarrytown, New York, and Dorothy Zetzsche and her husband John of Villa Rica, Georgia. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Margaret Ann Pogue, and two brothers, Robert and George Pogue.

A private memorial service was held at the Hearth on April 1.  The Swan Funeral Home of Madison was in charge of arrangements. Please visit www.swanfuneralhomemadison.com to leave memorial tributes.
