    Anne Prewitt Taylor Culver, Guilford

Anne Prewitt Taylor Culver of Guilford died on June 2 from complications of ovarian cancer. She was the wife of John Bailey. Ms. Culver was born in Hartford in 1958, daughter of the late Charles and Marietta Culver. She was raised in Simsbury, where she attended the Westminster School, and received her BA from Middlebury College and her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Ms. Culver was a professional artist who exhibited for over 25 years throughout the United States.  She was the recipient of many awards, and her work is in many private collections.  She worked primarily as a painter and was known for her depictions of landscape, volatile weather, and dramatic forces of nature. She also worked in sculpture and installation.

In addition to her career as a professional artist, Ms. Culver taught art for many years at various schools, including The Victor D’Amico Institute of Art in Amagansett, New York, the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, New York, the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, the Guilford Art Center in Guilford, and Artsplace in Cheshire.  Her most recent position (from 2005 to the present) was as adjunct professor of art at Quinnipiac University in Hamden.  She also taught privately for many years, and from 2007 to 2011 owned Studio 404 in Guilford, where she taught classes in a variety of art media.

Ms. Carver was active in the community, serving as a mentor from 2002 until the time of her death for Guilford Youth Mentoring.  She also participated in many community charity events over the years, donating her artwork for fundraising auctions, and she was active in the Relay for Life fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.

In addition to her love of family and friends, and her passion for art, Ms. Culver deeply enjoyed time spent in nature, and she was a great lover of animals, especially dogs.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her stepdaughter, Claire Bailey of Guilford; her brother, Peter Culver and his wife Anna Smolen Culver of Avon; her sister, Elizabeth Culver and her husband Joel Bernstein of Alexandria, Virginia; a nephew, Chilly Culver of Guilford; and three nieces, Molly Culver of Brooklyn, New York, Sara Culver of New Haven, and Victoria Culver of Avon.  She was predeceased by her first husband, Christopher Martinson.

A memorial service and celebration of life is scheduled for a later date to be announced.  Her family has requested NO FLOWERS, but donations in her memory may be made to Labs4rescue, Inc.
