Mathias Hettinger, 89, of Branford, died in Branford at the Connecticut Hospice on May 13. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Elizabeth Peterson, in 2010. Mr. Hettinger was born in Bridgeport on Nov. 11, 1922, son of the late Mathias Hettinger III and Mildred Bellwood Hettinger. He had been a professor of engineering at the University of Bridgeport.

He is survived by his stepdaughters, Kathleen Hrbek Hally of Branford and Barbara Hrbek Sauerbrei of Summerville, South Carolina. He is also survived by his nephew, Ed Chervansky of Bridgeport.  He was predeceased by his son, Timothy Mathias Hettinger.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m., at Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport. The W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. See online memorial @ www.wsclancy.com.
