    Frederick L. Smalley, Sr., 81, Branford

    Frederick L. Smalley, Sr., 81, of Branford, died peacefully on May 29 at the Connecticut Hospice.  He was the devoted husband of 58 years to Vardis Trojanoski Smalley. Fred was born in New York, New York, on July 13, 1931, son of the late Frederick and Rose Smalley.  He attended Branford High School and, just before graduation, was taken out of school to serve in the Korean Conflict in the U. S. Army with the 102nd Tank Company, 43rd Infantry Division. 

    Fred was a member of VFW Post 10186 and American Legion Post 83 of Branford.  He was dedicated to his church and community at Trinity Episcopal Church in Branford, and he was the owner of Shoreline Septic Tank Service for many years.  He also served on the RTM and was chairman for many years of the Litter Committee. Fred loved to be out working in his garden, and he was an avid Yankees and Rangers fan. 

    Besides his wife he is survived by his loving children, Jennifer DeHay and her husband Richard of Colchester, Frederick Smalley, Jr. of Durham, and Richard Smalley and his wife Kate of Branford. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, of whom he was very proud.

    Relatives and friends may call on Monday, June 3, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, and are invited to a funeral service on Monday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.  Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.  For directions and online memorial see www.wsclancy.com.
