    Doris Anne Hauptman, 84, Formerly of Madison

    Doris Anne Hauptman, 84, formerly of Madison, died peacefully July 27.

    She was born Nov. 4, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Albert C. Adams and Doris Margaret Gilchrist. She grew up in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and spent summers at her family’s cottage on Hotchkiss Lane in Madison. Doris loved playing tennis at the Madison Beach Club, where she met her future husband, Forbes. In 1952, Doris married Forbes Hauptman, they lived in West Hartford for most of their lives.

    She was a graduate of Beaver College, earning a B.A. in French and St. Joseph College, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education. She taught at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, and then at the Hartford Regional Center in Newington. Doris later went on to work for Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, where for many years she tirelessly advocated for children with learning disabilities in the public school system.

    Doris is survived by her sister Carol Benner and brother Albert Adams, Jr.; her sons Russell and his wife Charlene Hauptman of Wilmington, North Carolina and Rick Hauptman of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Forbes.

    A celebration of her life will be held Aug. 17 in Connecticut.
