    Mark Anthony 'Mitch' DeMatteo, 56, East Haven

    Mark Anthony “Mitch” DeMatteo, 56, of East Haven, died Sept. 2 at Connecticut Hospice. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Mitch was born Aug. 5, 1957 in New Haven to Louise A. (Pane) DeMatteo and the late Anthony “Mitch” DeMatteo of East Haven. He worked in the public works department of the Town of East Haven for more than 27 years.

    Mitch was a 1975 East Haven High School graduate who lettered in both football and baseball. He was an avid softball player and an umpire in the greater New Haven area for more than 30 years. He was a member of the East Haven Umpire’s Association and of the 1970 State Champion Annex Little League Team. For ten years he worked at the New Haven Coliseum as team manager for the New Haven Nighthawks. 

    In addition to his mother he is survived by two uncles, Robert and his wife Eunice DeMatteo of East Haven, and Sonny and his wife Rose Pane of New Haven; his aunt and godmother Nina Pane Sansaverino of New Haven; his aunt Josephine Lawrence of Naugatuck; many cousins and countless friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Louis DeMatteo; his paternal grandparents Stephen and Carmella DeMatteo; and maternal grandparents Luigi and Giuseppina Pane.   

    A funeral mass will be held Friday, Sept. 6 at St. Vincent dePaul Church, followed by burial in East Lawn Cemetery. The family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of one’s choice in Marks’s name. The East Haven Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
