    Mary Husak Sowa, 91, East Haven

    Mary Husak Sowa, 91, of East Haven, beloved wife of 71 years to the late John Sowa, died Sept. 25 at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale- New Haven Hospital. Mary was born May 15, 1922 in Pukacivchi, Western Ukraine. She came to the United States in 1949 and settled in New Haven in 1950.

    Prior to her retirement, she worked for the A.C. Gilbert Company, Burndy Corporation, and First Constitution Bank.

    She was devoted to her church and to her new country, and was a long time member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, and a member and past president of The Immaculate Conception Society/Sestrichi. She was also active in The Pyrohy Project, and a member of both  St. Michael’s Church choir and the Ukrainian National Choir, and the Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM).

    Her family would like to thank Dr. Allan Rodrigues, Dr. Joseph Balsamo, Dr. Richard Slater and the staff at Talmadge Park for their care and devotion.

    Mary is survived by her son Bohdan and his wife Ella Sowa of Branford. She was predeceased by two infant children; one brother; and two sisters.

    Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven, Sunday, Sept. 29 from 5-8 p.m., with Panachyda service at 7 p.m. Her funeral will be Monday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 569 George St., New Haven, with interment in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Church. The Celentano Funeral Home, New Haven, is in charge of arrangements.
