The world is recognizing what many in this region have long known - the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford is a wonderful and rare jewel.
The O'Neill staff learned Sunday that it will receive the 2010 Regional Theater Tony Award, considered a top industry honor.
Accolades go to George C. White, the theater center's founder who worked with Lloyd Richards in developing the idea of play development. Applause also to the late Amy Sullivan, the former O'Neill executive who died of cancer in June 2007, and to Preston Whiteway, its energetic current executive director.
Unique among regional theaters in providing a venue for playwrights to hone their creations, this honor for the O'Neill is well deserved.
