    Glad Venezuela not our neighbor

The value of the U.S. relationship with Mexico can be measured on many levels, from social to economic to strategic. Critical to the safety of both nations is Mexico's willingness to seek and use U.S. assistance in the fight against drug cartels.

Now consider Venezuela, a nation with a wacky leader who built his reputation on anti-American rhetoric. Since 1996, Venezuela has been considered a drug-trafficking hub.

The fear is that Venezuela will descend into a narcostate.

It demonstrates the importance of maintaining good relations with nations south of the border - especially Mexico, which has carried the burden of fighting cartels that supply the demand for illicit drugs in the United States.

It is in the United States' national-security interest to remain on friendly, cooperative terms with Mexico.
