SWIMMINGMergy, Lee qualifyOld Lyme — Old Lyme swimmers Caius Mergy and Jessica Lee recently qualified to swim in the YMCA National Long Course Swimming Championships to be held at the Georgia Institute of Technology Aquatics Center in Atlanta.

The YMCA swim meet consists of more than 1,200 swimmers from swim clubs across the United States, all of which have had to meet stringent time standards in order to qualify. This is the first Long Course meet to be held at Georgia Tech, the site of the 1996 US Olympic swimming events.

Mergy and Lee swim with the Valley-Shore YMCA Marlins swim team. Mergy, who will be a junior at The Williams School in New London, qualified in the 200-meter and 50-meter breaststroke. Lee, who will be a sophomore at Old Lyme High School, qualified in the 50 freestyle. They both qualified for nationals at the recent Connecticut Age Group Championships held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, where Mergy placed 10th in the 200 breaststroke and Lee Jess placed sixth in the 50 freestyle.

"I am proud that they both qualified for the Y Long Course Nationals and I am excited about the future and having them represent the Valley-Shore Y at future regional and national meets," head coach Patrick Callahan said. "They have helped set the standard for others in our program to attain.

"Caius came to the Valley-Shore Y Marlins from a very successful Y program in Wilton. His interest in swimming technique and the mechanics of swimming combined with his work ethic has served him well, particularly in breaststroke which requires timing, rhythm and conditioning."

Mergy is also co-captain of his high school varsity swim team and has smashed the 100 breaststroke record both at Williams and at his high school league championship this past season. He is a volunteer assistant coach for the Old Lyme Country Club Stingrays swim team. He maintained a 4.0 grade point average last year.

"I have watched Jessica swim since she was an 8-and-under swimmer in a summer swim league," Callahan said. "She also has a background in gymnastics and soccer. Her athleticism and competiveness has made her a swimmer to reckon with at every age group along her swimming career."

Lee also swims on the Old Saybrook Racquet Club during the summer in addition to swimming for the Valley-Shore YMCA Marlins. She is on the high honor roll at Old Lyme High School, and plays on the varsity soccer team and on the SE Connecticut Premier team.

TENNISPondview Racquet ClubWesterly — The Pondview Racquet Club 8.0 tennis team of won the New England Section championships in Springfield, Mass. The team advanced to the national championships in Tuscon, Ariz., in November.

The team, captained by Angelo Dispirito, first had to get through the district championships in June. Then, in single-elimination format, it beat three other teams to advance to the semifinals and then the finals.

"I am really proud of the way this team played," Dispirito said. "They gutted out every match."
