Bristol - Eleventh-seeded Fitch High School gave Bristol Eastern an early scare, winning the opening game 25-18, but the third-seeded Lancers came roaring back to win the next three games 25-10, 25-13, 25-15 to win their Class L volleyball quarterfinal round match Tuesday night.

"We got them in the beginning," said Fitch coach Steve Banks, whose Falcons finished 15-7. "But once they got the momentum going they were really tough. They're just a well-coached, very talented team.

"I would think they're the team to beat in Class L."

Michelina Pinto had 18 digs to lead Fitch while Nikki Schoolcraft added 19 assists and Ashley Adams finished with 10 kills.

"We were up and down, but then turned it around toward the end of the season," Banks said. "I thought we were once of the better teams in the state the last few weeks of the season. I'm real proud of my girls. They made a nice run into a very strong Class L bracket."

In other volleyball news:

• Third-seeded Ledyard, which reached the semifinals of the state tournament for the first time in program history, will play No. 2 Weston at 5 p.m. today at Berlin High School as part of a Class M doubleheader. No. 1 Woodland of Beacon Falls will play No. 5 Tolland in the other semi at 7 p.m. The title game is at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Haven High School.

Men's basketball

• Malcolm Simmons of New London had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lift UConn-Avery Point to an 81-64 victory over Bunker Hill Community College. Philkwan Tate finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Pointers (2-1), Mike Martin and Sam Turner had 13 points apiece and Tyler Barnes added 10 points.

Women's basketball

• Jackie Riera scored 19 points and Mikayla Wells 10 during UConn-Avery Point's 92-56 loss to the Community College of Rhode Island. The Pointers are 2-2.

College field hockey

• Connecticut College junior back Andrea Hoisington was a second team selection on the 2012 All-New England Small College Athletic Conference team. Hoisington started all 15 games and had a defensive save against Middlebury. She is also a Dean's List student majoring in psychology.

College volleyball

• Seniors Rachel Schroff and Katie Ketcham were named to the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches' Association) All-America team as honorable mention picks. Schroff was the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year while Ketcham, a setter was also a first team All-NESCAC pick. They helped lead the Camels to their first NCAA tournament bid.

College football

• UConn senior wide receiver and return specialist Nick Williams has been named one of four finalists for the third annual Pop Warner National College Football Award.

The award, established in 2010, recognizes a Pop Warner alumnus who has made a difference on the field, in the classroom and in his community. Williams played Pop Warner football in Highstown, N.J., in sixth, seventh and eighth grade.

The 2012 finalists also include Duke quarterback Sean Renfree, Miami (Fla.) running back Mike James and Michigan offensive guard Patrick Omameh. The winner will be announced on Dec. 5 during the 56th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
