Local roundup: Schooners split pair with Newport
Groton - Kurt Sowa (Rider) pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as the Mystic Schooners beat the Newport Gulls 6-2 in the second game to earn a split of their New England Collegiate Baseball doubleheader at Fitch High School on Saturday.
Newport (13-7) won the opener 7-0. Sowa did not walk a batter and struck out six for the Schooners (11-9) while Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs with his second home run of the summer.

• First-place Montville improved to 16-2 by sweeping a doubleheader at Danielson, 2-0 and 6-2. Dominic Walmsley pitched a two-hitter in the opener for Montville and Zach Lutzen was the winning pitcher in the second game.
• Will Trask scored the winning run from third base on a fielding error with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give Norwich a 6-5 win in the first game of its doubleheader sweep over Ledyard-Pawcatuck. Norwich won the opener 5-3 behind winning pitcher Eric LaPorte.
