    Local roundup: Platt outlasts Waterford 47-40

    Waterford — Joseph Mwamba threw three touchdowns passes and ran for another as the Platt High School football team pulled away in the fourth quarter and beat Waterford, 47-40, in a non-conference game on Friday night.

    The score was tied at 34 in the fourth quarter when Tyzahn Leatherwood scored on a 1-yard run. Jamel Holder followed with a 35-yard fumble return for a touchdown to push the Panthers advantage to 47-34.

    Leatherwood ran 38 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

    Isaiah Jones ran three times for 144 yards, including touchdown runs of 8 and 81 yards, for the Lancers. Chase Speller added eight carries for 179 yards and scored.

    Jake Mangual scored on runs of 8 and 81 yards for Waterford and Spencer Hoagland ran for a 3-yard touchdown.

    H.S. swimming

    • Ugne Kirvelevicius won two events and set a pool record as East Lyme opened its season with wins over Suffield and Old Lyme.

    The Vikings beat Suffield 142-41 and Old Lyme 146-26. Kirvelevicius won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute 10.17 seconds, breaking the East Lyme Aquatics Center record of 1:10.54 set by Adelaide Taylor of Fitch in 2007. Kivelevicius also won the 200 IM. Also winning events for the Vikings were Emma Magna, Gretchen Stelter, Hanna Suarez, Tori Poole, Melina Wei, Carlie Biondi and Alexis Dumais.

    • Asia Langley won two individual events and was part of the winning 200-meter medley relay as Waterford won its season opener with a 95-85 victory over Haddam-Killingworth. Langley won the 50 free (27.85) and 100 butterfly (1:06.69) for the Lancers while teaming up with Meika Gathy, Caitlin Henderson and Cassie Medbery in to win the relay in 2:14.64. Gathy swam a personal best to win the 400 free (4:54.46) while Henderson won the 100 breaststroke (1:25.36) and Katherine Tsiouris won the diving competition (165.30 points).

    H.S. volleyball

    • Montville swept Norwich Tech 25-18, 25-10, 25-22. Lauryn Benoit had five kills while Mia Ferguson had three blocks and Olivia Fargo added eight digs for the Indians (1-1). Elanna Sanon had 10 digs, three kills and one block for the Warriors (0-2).

    • Fitch improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 25-12, 25-9, 25-21 win over Waterford. Caroline Taber had eight kills and 18 service points for the Falcons while Mae Sefransky added 17 assists and Michelina Pinto had nine digs and 13 service points. It was Waterford's season opener.

    • Sophie Swedin had 38 assists to help lead Norwich Free Academy to a 3-1 win over Plainfield. Abby Mattern added 18 service points for the Wildcats (2-0) while Isis Deolatch had 12 kills and Mckenzie Burke 12 digs.

    • Wheeler completed a perfect 3-0 week with a 25-16, 25-11, 25-20 win over Ellis Tech. Jen Paride led the Lions with five kills, four aces and two blocks while Alysia Rathbun added seven kills and five aces and Christie Sehl had six kills and one ace.

    Women's volleyball

    • Amanda Garcia had six kills in Mitchell College's 3-0 loss to Wesleyan University. Game scores were 25-9, 25-10, 25-7. The Mariners fell to 2-3.

    Men's cross country

    • Sophomore Samuel Williams placed third in 29 minutes, 49 seconds to pace Mitchell at the 2014 Mitchell Invite at Stenger Farm Park in Waterford. Mitchell beat Newbury College 21-34. Newbury's Chris Beaudoin finished first in 29:27.4. Elms College also competed but didn't post a team score.

    Women's cross country

    • Senior Bridgette Burns was Mitchell's top finisher, taking fifth in the 2014 Mitchell Invite. Her time was 24:18. Mitchell lost to Elms College, 16-46. Elms freshman Sarah Tatgenhorst posted a winning time of 20:55.7. Newbury also competed but didn't qualify as a team.

    Local golf

    • Sue Schmidtknecht and Matthew Shea combined to win the Great Neck Country Club mixed team championship last weekend. They shot a 63. In other news, the Great Neck Men's Invitational will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, with tee times ranging from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entry fee is $60 and includes greens fees, prizes and lunch. Registration deadline is Oct. 15 and field is limited to the first 100 golfers. For more information, call the pro shop at 439-1524.

    • Anthony Kargul and Steve Pracniak finished first in the Elmridge Golf Course Labor Day Four Ball Tournament. John Croteau and Bob Paterno took second. In the recent Elmridge member-guest tourney, Pete and Dick Stefanski placed first with a 133 in the 36-hole stroke play event. Ian MacKay and Chris Converse won the net division with a 119.

    • James Ballato of Pawcatuck fired a 73 to win the boys' 10-12 division in the Jack Kelly PGA Junior Tournament of Championship earlier this month at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. He had a 2-under 33 on the back nine.
