    Local roundup: Conn women lose to Amherst in NESCAC hockey semis

    Middlebury, Vt. — Goalie Sabrina Dobbins made 30 saves as fifth-seeded Amherst College defeated No. 4 Connecticut College 2-0 Saturday in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's hockey tournament at Middlebury College.

    Amherst will play top-seeded Middlebury, a 4-1 winner over No. 6 Bowdoin, at 2 p.m. Sunday with the winner earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournanment.

    The Purple & White (14-7-5) scored both goals in the first period, the first coming at the 11:46 mark when Alex Toupal lifted a rebound over Conn goalie Katherine Chester, and the second coming with only 3:25 left in the opening period when Toupal sent Katelyn Pantera in alone and Pantera redirected the pass behind Chester.

    The Camels (15-8-3), who held a 30-22 edge in shots, had six power plays, but couldn't convert.

    Women's basketball

    • Second-seeded Gateway Community College defeated No. 3 UConn Avery Point 97-64 in the semifinals of the Region 21 tournament at Brockton, Mass. Taty LaFrance Boyce had 29 points and four blocks for the Pointers, who finish 12-11, while Meagan Bianchi added 23 points. Gateway will play No. 1 Roxbury CC, a 79-63 win over No. 4 Massasoit, in Sunday's final at noon.

    College baseball

    • Kyle Hartenstein went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to lead Mitchell College to a 13-3 win over Wheaton (Ill.) in Punta Garda, Fla. Garet Griffin (three runs), Rolando Marcano and Jack Finnegan (three RBI) all had two hits for the Mariners (3-1). Axel DeJesus (1-1) scattered seven hits and three runs, all earned, over 6.1 innings to earn the victory.

    • Rockford overcame an early 3-0 deficit by scoring six unearned runs to defeat Coast Guard Academy 6-3 in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bears (0-4) would score a run in the first on Brendan McNeil's infield out and two more in the second on Trey Rittenhouse's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Will Stephens. Rittenhouse also doubled for Coast Guard, which had only two hits.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Catholic University overcame a three-goal halftime deficit to hand Coast Guard its first loss, 11-9. Benner Geurtsen and Riley McNulty each had two goals and one assist for Coast Guard (2-1) while Blaise Curtis added one goal and two assists and Anthony Wyler had one goal and one assist. Bennett Bradley scored seven goals for Catholic (5-1).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Stockton overcame a 4-3 halftime deficit to beat Coast Guard 11-7 in Galloway, N.J. Daria McKenna and Anna McGolrick each had two goals and one assist for the Bears (0-3) while Abigail Bradford scored twice and Carter Sanderson once. Alex Rubino scored five goals for Stockton (1-1).

    Indoor track

    • Coast Guard's 4x400 men's relay team finished second at the Tufts Last Chance meet to keep its hopes alive for a bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. Nicholas Frystak, Jacob Pawlina, Luke Rehfuss and Raeford Penny finished in 3:19.48. The Bears will find out Monday if they qualify for the nationals.

    • Also at Tufts, Conn College freshman Koko Mensah finished second in the women's shot with a personal best throw of 41 feet, 5.75 inches.

    Black Wolves win in OT

    • Kevin Buchanan scored his fourth goal of the game with 2:27 left in regulation, and Sheldon Burns followed up with the game-winner in overtime as the New England Black Wolves beat the Toronto Rock 10-9 in a National Lacrosse League game Friday night. It was the fourth overtime game of the season for New England (4-6), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Burns converted on a pass from Kyle Buchanan, who collected the last of his four assists setting up the game-winner. Burns also had two assists, finishing with a season-high three points. Kevin Buchanan had four goals — including New England’s league-leading 10th short-handed goal of the year — and three assists while Kevin Crowley had two goals and four assists.
