Local colleges: Mitchell inches closer to NECC baseball title

New London — Mitchell College moved a big step closer to clinching the New England Collegiate Conference regular season baseball title with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Vermont on Saturday.

The Mariners (25-10, 12-3) need only one win in their three remaining conference games this week to defend their crown.

They pounded out a combined 25 hits in 11-4 and 10-8 victories in game one and game two, respectively. Garet Griffin, the NECC hitting leader at .510, was a perfect 6-for-6 with five RBI and four runs scored on the day.

In the first game, the Mariners trailed 4-0 before jumping in front for good with a three-run fourth inning. Francis Prettitore (3-for-4) drilled a two-run single and Griffin added an RBI sacrifice fly to fuel the outburst. Fitch graduate Tristan Hurley finished with two hits, a walk and RBI while Alex De Jesus (5-4) earned the win.

Mitchell rode a power surge to rally for a win in game two as Hurley, Kyle Hartenstein, Steven Gonzalez and Griffin slugged home runs. Hurley's two-run blasted snapped an 8-8 tie in the sixth. Reliever Brian Ricker (5-1) allowed four hits and two runs in six innings, striking out five and walking one, to earn the win.
