    Local roundup: Walker's perfect as Waterford LL softball wins 12-0

    Bristol — Waterford is off to a perfect start at the East Regional Little League 11-12 softball tournament.

    After opening play with a 13-0 win over Worcester (Mass.) on Saturday, Waterford rode Milly Walker's perfect game to a 12-0 win over Delaware champion Delmar on Sunday. The game, like Saturday's, ended after four innings on a mercy rule. Waterford plays New Jersey champion Robbinsville in the double-elimination tournament on Monday at 4 p.m.

    Walker, who struck out seven, could relax a bit after her team put up 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning.

    Maddie Burrows capped the first-inning outburst with a two-run triple. Emma Marelli had a two-run single, Lily Marelli had a pair of RBI singles, Adrianna Donahue hit a run-scoring double and Walker tripled and scored on a single by Anna Dziecinny.

    Emma Marelli was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, Lily Marelli was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Donahue drove in two runs and Burrows scored twice and drove in three runs.

    NE Babe Ruth (14)

    • Waterford completed pool play with a 4-2 win over Pittsfield (Mass.) in the New England tournament at Trumbull. Waterford, which went 2-1, plays New Hampshire champion Keene in the quarterfinals on Monday at 1 p.m.

    Ryan Bakken got the win, allowing two hits and one earned run over five innings, and Owen Coderre threw two hitless innings in relief. Anthony Tonucci singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Matt Sanford tripled, drove in a run and scored twice for Waterford.  

    State Legion tournament

    • Waterford's season came to an end with a 6-1 loss to Avon, and the Zone VI team was almost no-hit in the process. Nicholas Porazzi singled with two outs in the top of the seventh for Waterford's only hit as Avon's Connor Harris threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.

    Waterford got its only run in the top of the first. Mike Rocchetti was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Petchark. John Pellegrino took the loss, allowing six hits and three earned runs over five innings with two strikeouts and six walks.

    Schooners sweep

    • The Mystic Schooners continued their playoff push by sweeping a doubleheader from the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The Schooners (21-16) won the opener 3-2 behind Ryan Smith's four-hitter and won the second game 6-2. The Schooners have a five-game lead over Danbury for the third and final playoff spot in the Southern Division with six games to go.

    Smith (Princeton) struck out nine with no walks in a seven-inning complete game. The Schooners broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook). John Trousdale (Alabama) had a sacrifice fly and Chris Winkel (UConn) scored the game's first run on an error.

    In the second game, Mystic scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) had a two-run double and Garet Griffin (Mitchell College) added a two-run single. Ramiz was 3-for-3 and scored three times.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Waterford Blue opened the playoffs with an 8-2 win over Waterford Red. Jordan Hancock pitched six innings for the win, allowing two hits with eight strikeouts. Tyler Howser had two hits, Jake Huff homered and Hancock doubled for Blue.  

    Speedbowl

    • Keith Rocco won a pair of races on Saturday night at the Waterford-New London Speedbowl. Berlin's Rocco picked up his third wins in four tries in the 35-lap SK Modified Division and finished the night off with a win in the 30-lap Late Models race. Other winners included Ken Cassidy Jr. (25-lap Mini Stock), Joey Ternullo (25-lap Legends Cars), Andrew Molleur (25-lap SK Lites) and Adrien Paradis (25-lap Limited Sportsman).

    In the SK Modified race, Rocco pulled away from second-place driver Ted Christopher and cruised to victory. Kyle James finished third. Jason Palmer was second in the Late Models race followed by Anthony Flannery. Sean Caron was second in the Mini Stocks followed by Wayne Burroughs Jr., Brandon Martinez and Kyle Rodgers followed Ternullo in Legends, Dennis Charette was second in SK Lites followed by Dana DiMatteo and Monte Gibbs and Jordan Hadley followed Paradis in the Limited Sportsman race. 

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • Tucker Zeeman pitched five scoreless innings as Salem/Bozrah beat Lyme/Old Lyme 8-0 on Saturday. Austin Sevigny homered twice and Max VanDusen had two hits for Salem/Bozrah and Santiago Rodriguez of Lyme/Old Lyme doubled.

    • Robert Moynihan's walk-off double scored Derek Kennedy and Robert Campbell as Ledyard beat New London 3-2 on Saturday. Matt Scarpa turned two double plays and Campbell had two hits for Ledyard. Greg Santoro of New London struck out seven batters.

    • East Lyme beat Waterford 11-1 on Saturday in a game which ended after four innings on a mercy rule. Gavin O'Brien pitched a four-hitter for the win. Owen Elmer homered twice and had a single and Anthony Enos doubled twice for East Lyme. Zach Beardsley doubled for Waterford.

    • Luke Noreika's grand slam lifted Mystic to a 14-3 win over Groton on Saturday. Joey Basso and Jackson LaLima had two hits each and Charlie MacPherson and Dylan Meyer had doubles for Mystic. Nathan Lowry of Groton homered.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • Waterford Blue beat New London 12-2 on Saturday. Dylan Mathis struck out four and Sean Kramer and Torin Gordy had doubles for Waterford. Eddie Torres of New London struck out six over three innings.

    • Aidan Johnson pitched three innings and had two hits as Montville beat Waterford Red 12-9 on Saturday. Noah Keenan had three hits for Montville and Jayden Hart earned the win in relief. Daniel Girard and Nick Ingram had two hits each for Waterford.
