    Local college notes

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team continues to be deadly from long range. The Bears rank first in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 40.2, sinking 151 of 376 attempts. Junior Sean Graytok is first in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 47.1 (16-for-34) and junior Packy Witkowski fifth at 42.6 (52 for 122). Freshman Tyler Perez has made the second most 3-pointers on the team with 29, shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc. Coast Guard (10-6, 1-5) hosts Wheaton (10-6, 1-5) on Wednesday.

    Camel highlights

    • The Connecticut College women's hockey team split an important series with Williams last week, winning 2-1 in overtime Friday and losing 3-2 on Saturday. Senior forward Jordan Cross had a productive weekend, scoring the game-winner in the first game and adding a goal in game two. Cross upped her season total to seven goals and five assists. She's in a five-way tie for third in goals in the league along with sophomore teammate Erin Dillon. The Camels (8-5-2, 4-4-2) are tied for sixth in the NESCAC.

    Mariners riding a wave

    Mitchell College will attempt to become the unofficial king of local men's college basketball when it hosts Connecticut College on Monday, Jan. 28. The Mariners won last year's meeting, 75-68. The Mariners already beat Coast Guard, 84-83, on Dec. 8 behind the play of senior frontcourt standout Domenico Santiago who finished with 27 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks. Coast Guard defeated Conn College, 101-72, on Dec. 5.

    Around the region

    • UConn sophomore Megan Walker was named to the American Athletic Conference women's basketball weekly honor roll. Walker averaged 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in wins over Tulane and Temple.

    • Senior Jalen Adams earned a spot on the AAC men's basketball weekly honor roll after averaging 29 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 54.5 percent from the field in UConn's games against Tulane and Tulsa.

    Geary McLeod, a senior from Waterford High, scored 18 points for the Western Connecticut State University basketball team in a 68-60 win over Southern Maine on Monday.

    • Former Waterford standout Mikey Buscetto continues to play a reserve role for the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team. A freshman guard, he is averaging 2.1 points and 1.1 assists while averaging 8.4 minutes per game in 13 appearances. He is shooting 47.6 percent (10-for-21) from the field.

    • Sophomore guard Jada Lucas, a former New London star, is contributing off the bench for the America East-leading Hartford women's basketball team. In 17 appearances, she's averaging 2.4 points in 10.3 minutes per game for the Hawks (12-7, 5-0).
