    Local roundup: Coast Guard, Mitchell win in OT in men's lacrosse

    Kings Point, N.Y. — Anthony Wyler scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Coast Guard to a 12-11 win over Merchant Marine in a men's lacrosse game on Saturday.

    Wyler finished with a hat trick, while teammate Riley McNulty led the Bears (5-2) with four goals. Connor Rowan and Matty Johnson contributed two goals apiece for the winners.

    In other games:

    • Jacob Anderson's goal at 1:20 of overtime lifted Mitchell College to a 12-11 win over Mt. St. Vincent and gave the Mariners their first win of the season. Anderson finished with a team-best five goals and one assist on 15 shots, while Kyle Marsh, Jade Shields and Brandon Snyder all scored two goals for Mitchell (1-6).

    • Jack Rutter scored three goals and added two assists, but Conn College could not gain the upper hand at any point in a 17-11 loss to Colby in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jon Creed and P.J. Kelleher added three assists each for the Camels (3-4, 0-4).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Robyn Pirie had four goals and two assists as No. 10 Colby beat Connecticut College 12-7 in a NESCAC game. Jamie Navoni had four goals, an assist and two draw controls to lead Conn (2-5, 0-4) and teammate Abbie Cronin caused three turnovers and had three ground balls.

    • Coast Guard scored four goals in the final 11 minutes to force overtime, but the Bears lost, 10-9, to Smith College. Freshman Maddie Rizutto recorded a hat trick and Carter Sanderson added a pair of goals for the Bears (1-6, 0-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference).

    • Mitchell College fell behind 9-4 at the half and couldn't recover in the non-conference loss. Kate McCormack paced the Mariners (0-2) with four goals on seven shots, while Francesca Pinard added a goal and two assists.

    Women's swimming

    • Connecticut College finished 15th at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The Camels had 85 points and finished the four-day event with three school records. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Vaughn Ammon, Kenzie Healy, Maddie Ford and Olivia Haskell were seventh in a school record 3:25.83 to earn NCAA All-America honors. They also broke the school record earlier in the day at 3:26.26 in the preliminary round.

    Senior captains Maeve Wilber and Haskell also broke school records, Wilbur in the 200 backstroke (2:03.18, 17th place) and Haskell in the 100 free (50.64), 10th place), where she broke her own school record. Wilbur topped the 2:04.60 by Julia Klier in 2017.

    Coast Guard's Josie McGuire placed 26th in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:28.36. The Bears' 400 freestyle relay of Emily Benson, Kristen Durham-Young, McGuire and Sarah Passilla were 22nd (3:30.57) and Passilla was 50th in the 100 freestyle (52.65).

    Men's swimming

    • Joe Rodriguez earned his third All-America honor of the weekend as he placed seventh in the 100 freestyle to close out the NCAA Division III Championships at Greensboro, N.C. Rodriguez set the school record with a time of 44.53 to place fifth in the preliminaries and earn a spot in the championship where he posted a time of 44.88  to place seventh.

    Coast Guard finished 13th with 81 points. Eric Fuhs earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 breaststroke as he tied for 13th (2:01.07) while Chasse Sodemann was 30th (2:18.38). The 400 freestyle relay of Dan Jenkins, Rodriguez, Patrick Jackson and John Pompay were 21st in 3:05.17.

    College baseball

    • Avery Point swept Westchester Community College in a doubleheader, winning the opener 3-1 and the second game 11-4. Old Lyme's Jordan Warecke and Waterford's Collin Bakken combined on a four-hitter in the opener. Warecke got the win, pitching five shutout innings and allowing one hit with six strikeouts and one walk. Alex Petchark of Waterford  had two hits.

    The Pointers (3-7) put together a 12-hit attack in the second game. Jeremy Nunes was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer and four RBI while Seamus Barry of Montville and New London's Elijah Martinez and Aidan Brennan had two hits each. Noah Yokoi also homered for the Pointers and Lyme's Liam Milewski got the win with four innings of shutout relief.

    • Mason Feole pitched seven strong innings as UConn beat Houston 2-1 in its American Athletic Conference opener on Friday night. Feole allowed three hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts. UConn (12-7) scored twice in the fourth inning. Christian Fedko doubled home John Toppa and scored on Cole Brodnasky's single.

    Softball

    • Mitchell College swept a nonleague doubleheader with Northern Vermont-Lyndon, winning Game 1 18-3 and the second game 12-4. Madison Nicynski went 6-for-8 with a homer, two doubles and a seven RBI as the Mariners pounded out 32 hits on the day. Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey finished with five hits while Suzanne Vachon and Sydney Oatway had four each.
