    Local roundup: Waterford Legion advances to Super Regional title round

    South Windsor — Robert Zawacki pitched a two-hitter as Waterford advanced to the championship round of the Connecticut American Legion Northern Division Super Regional baseball tournament with a 2-1 win over Bristol on Monday night at Rotary Field.

    Waterford will must beat unbeaten Southington twice in the double-elimination tournament to advance to the state championship final series. The two teams meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a deciding game, if necessary, to be played on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

    After Bristol scored its only run on an error in the second inning, Waterford rallied to take the lead in the fifth when it had two of its three hits off losing pitcher Stephen Warkoski.

    Anthony Tonucci started the comeback with a one-out single and stole second. Ryan O'Connell tied the game with a one-out single to scored Tonucci and O'Connell scored the go-ahead run on a two-out double by Robert Silva.

    Zawacki stranded the tying run at second in the sixth and seventh inning. He worked around a two-out double in the sixth before retiring the final two outs in the seventh after Warkoski drew a leadoff walk and was bunted to second by Alec DiLoreto.

    Schooners lose opener

    • The Danbury Westerners defeated the Mystic Schooners 3-2 in eight innings in the first game of a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader in Danbury. Noah Kessinger (UMass) went 2-for-4 to lead the Schooners (20-19-1) while David Beam (East Tennessee) had an RBI single during a two-run sixth that tied the game at 2-2.

    DAZ tournament (11-12)

    • Jack Hayes pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts as East Lyme beat New London 7-0 in a semifinal in the Dominick A. Zuliani tournament in Groton on Sunday night. Garrison Biggs and Noah Farrior had doubles and AJ Montejano and Hayes had two hits each for East Lyme.

    • Waterford defeated Montville 3-2 in Sunday's other semifinal. Matt Gonet scattered six hits over five innings while striking out four to earn the win while Remy Coderre had three hits and drove in a run while Lucas Saunders added an RBI double. Jack Treat had three hits for Montville while Hunter Sylvia and PJ Evans each had doubles.

    • Groton's Reis Whitfield won the DAZ Home Run Derby on Sunday with five home runs, including a walk-off home run in the final round.

    • Montville defeated Groton 9-5 in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Luke Chapman struck out all five batters he faced over 1.2 innings to earn the win while P.J. Evans had a pair of hits. Gabe Grossman had two hits and three RBI for Groton.

    DAZ tournament (9-10)

    • East Lyme defeated Mystic 7-5 on Sunday to reach the tournament final. Max Montejano allowed only one hit while striking out four over 2.1 innings to earn the win while Harrison Papuga drove in two runs and Karch Kaczor added a single and double. Kinsley Watson and Daemon Flax had hits for Mystic.

    • Groton defeated East Lyme 2 17-7 on Friday night. Winning pitcher Frank Campagna struck out three over 4.2 innings, reliever Liam Pelletier struck out three over 1.1 innings, T.J. Griffith had two hits with three runs scored and Peyton Smith had two singles and three runs. Blaize Libby walked twice and scored twice for East Lyme 2.
