    Local roundup: Fitch boys beat East Lyme for fourth straight soccer win

    Groton — Caleb Robbins scored a goal just six minutes into the second half and Fitch pulled away for a 4-0 boys' soccer victory over East Lyme on Thursday afternoon at Poquonnock Plains Field.

    The Falcons (12-3), who scored three goals in the second half to break the match open, have won four straight and nine of their last 10.

    Robbins and Seamus Greaves had two goals apiece for Fitch while Eric Leuchner had two assists, Timmy Lynch and Douglas Cardona each had an assist and goalie Ramiro Zavala made four saves to earn the shutout.

    Owen Brown stopped eight shots in goal for the Vikings (7-4-2).

    In other matches:

    • Sam Montalto scored three goals in the first half as Stonington cruised to a 4-1 victory over Ledyard. Wynn Hammond added a second-half goal for the Bears (11-0-2) while Tyler Fidrych had a pair of assists and Billy de Castro and Elias Dahl had one assist each. Nick Washington, assisted by Daimon Pollard, scored for the Colonels (11-3).

    Girls' soccer

    • Montville erupted for four goals in the second half to defeat Putnam 5-1. Madison Gressly had two goals and an assist for the Indians (5-6-3) while Madisen Price and McKinley Bond each scored a goal, Sydney Winakor added an assist and goalie Julia Beaupre stopped eight shots.

    • St. Bernard and Lyman Memorial played to a scoreless tie. Lindsey Reilly stopped two shots for the Saints (6-4-4), who held a 6-3 edge in shots, while Lyman goalie Morgan Tartaglia had three saves.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Fitch celebrated senior day with a 2-1 victory over Waterford in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Ella Bergendahl, assisted by Bridget O'Leary, scored the first goal for the Falcons (8-7, 6-5) while Ashleigh Holmes scored the second goal on an assist from Oonagh Zimbelmann. Shannon Carter, assisted by Molly Quiles, scored for the Lancers (2-11, 2-8). Fitch goalie Hailie Kesterson made three saves and Waterford goalie Nini Yangga stopped five shots.

    H.S. volleyball

    • East Lyme dropped the first game before bouncing back for a 3-1 win over Griswold. Game scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20. Mya Delesdernier had 22 kills for the Vikings (10-7) while Ellie Meredith added 30 assists.

    • Maya Hillman had seven blocks, three kills and four digs to highlight Montville's 3-1 victory over Plainfield in an ECC Division III match. Game scores were 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-17. Mackenzie Clark added 14 digs, nine assists and one block for the Indians (9-8, 3-3) while Anna Kreitlow finished with 22 digs.

    College volleyball

    • Coast Guard Academy is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III New England poll, the highest ranking in coach Mike Bynon's five seasons. The Bears are 16-7 overall and 5-3 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, which had three other teams ranked in the top 10: Babson (No. 2), Wellesley (No. 3) and MIT (No. 8). Tufts is ranked first.

    Sophomore Amanda Dake leads Coast Guard with 259 kills and is second with 232 digs while senior Angelou Dunton, who last week registered her 1,000 career kill, is second on the team with 198 kills and third with 212 digs. Freshman Noelle Tursky (184 kills) has a team-high 42 aces while junior Veronica Hine leads the Bears with 329 digs.
