    Local college roundup: No. 4 ECSU softball team sweeps Coast Guard

    Mansfield — Former Montville High School standout Alexis Michon earned her 15th win of the season and Fitch graduate Cassie Woods recorded her 99th career hit in just two seasons as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team swept Coast Guard 6-0 and 5-2 Wednesday.

    Eastern, ranked fourth nationally, ran its win streak to 14 straight games, improving to 30-4 while Coast Guard dropped to 16-12.

    In the first game, Carley Stoker's two-run homer led Eastern to four runs in the first and Morgan Bolduk and Stoker combined for a two-hit shutout. Woods doubled, stole a base and scored. Christine Carey and Isabelle Shroyer each singled for Coast Guard.

    In game two, a sacrifice fly by Shroyer tied the game at 1-1 in the second but Eastern scored one in the third for a 2-1 lead and added three runs in the fourth. Katie Becker had two hits, including a double, to lead Coast Guard. Michon (15-1) pitched four innings for the win, striking out five, walking one and allowing three hits.

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College came away with a pair of nonconference wins over Anna Maria, 6-1 and 6-5. In the opener, the Mariners fell behind 1-0 before roaring back with six unanswered runs. Gemma Landry and Griswold's Sarah Aviles each had three hits and starting pitcher Katelyn Lipsky struck out 10 batters over six innings to earn the victory. Mitchell was a walk-off winner in the second game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Nene Capeles drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Emma LaBreck third base. LaBreck went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Hailey Hill of Griswold earned her first win of the season.

    Baseball

    • New England College swept Mitchell College 10-7 and 2-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Mariners fell behind 8-0 in the opener but fought back to within striking distance, getting homers from Justin Adorno and New London's Lelo Martinez, with Adorno's blast sparking a three-run seventh inning that saw Mitchell bring the tying run to the plate. In the second game, the teams battled through eight scoreless innings. Mitchell went up 1-0 in the top of the ninth, but NEC rallied for two runs in the home half to walk off with the win on a single by Connor Morin. Mitchell is 23-9 overall, 6-4 in the NECC.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Mitchell College ended the regular season with a 17-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene in New England Collegiate Conference play. It was the Mariners' largest margin of victory since 2016 and their first shutout since 2011. John Porcelli led the offense with a career-high five goals while Aidan Messuri added four goals and two assists. Weston Schumacher finished with a hat trick and James Giovanniello chipped in two goals and three assists. Mitchell led 8-0 after one quarter. The Mariners are 4-11 overall, 2-2 in the NECC.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Katie Martel had a game-high five goals as Springfield held on for an 11-10 win over Coast Guard in the regular-season finale. Coast Guard took an 8-7 lead with 10:28 left in the third quarter before the Pride scored four straight taking an 11-8 lead with 10:08 left.

    • Springfield improved to 11-5 overall and 8-1 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard finished the regular season 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Pride finished in a three-way tie for first in the conference. Coast Guard will be the fourth seed in the NEWMAC tournament and host fifth-seeded Wheaton in the quarterfinals at noon Saturday. Gianna Cascio led Coast Guard with three goals and Devon McCue made 10 saves.
