Rescuers find teen who lost his way at Bluff Point

Groton - Searchers were called in to scour the woods Thursday night after a teenager lost his way - and his cell phone - after dark at Bluff Point State Park.

Searchers found the teen, who suffered minor injuries after he tripped and fell, banging his knee, safe at about 11:30 p.m.

The 19-year-old was visiting the park with four friends. When the four companions left at 7:30 p.m., the teen said he was staying at the park and going fishing.

Sometime after 10 p.m., the friends lost contact with the teen, who had stopped texting them, so they called police.

The Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Mystic Fire Department, Groton Town Police, state police, and state Department of Environmental Protection all participated in the search, said Poquonnock Bridge Acting Capt. Mike Gale, who commanded the scene. Mystic was called in to use its ATVs.

Gale said about 20 searchers looked for the teen, who was found about a mile into the park, 1,500 feet off the main road. He didn't have a flashlight and had lost his cell phone.
