Police investigate death of real estate agent

The Major Crime Squad division of the state police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death earlier this month of well-known real estate agent Holly Lombardi.

Lombardi, 43, of Waterford, died on June 3, according to her obituary. The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy but has not yet determined a cause of death, which is "pending further study," according to the office.

At about 6 p.m. on June 1, East Lyme police received an emergency call reporting an unresponsive female. Emergency responders found Lombardi in her vehicle in the parking lot of a local business, state police said, declining to name the business.

Crews treated Lombardi at the scene and then took her to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, where she later died.

The East Lyme Resident State Trooper's office turned the investigation over to the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad.

State police Sgt. Bill Bundy said Monday that the major crime squad unit is "investigating to ensure there's no criminal wrongdoing."

Bundy said he couldn't comment further on the case because of the investigation. As for whether state police were looking into a circumstance as serious as murder, Bundy said there is "nothing to suggest" that.

Lombardi was well known in real estate circles, and a billboard of her posing with her daughter to advertise her company, Holly Lombardi Real Estate, had stood along the side of Route 85 for years.

In March 2009, The Day featured Lombardi among people whose stories the newspaper chronicled in a series about the ups and downs of local businesses attempting to survive the recession. According to that article, Lombardi started her real estate career with William Raveis Real Estate before forming her own business in 2002.

Lombardi's husband, John Lombardi, is a home builder in the region, and Holly Lombardi became the agent for all of his properties, according to the story.

"We build. Holly sells," John Lombardi said at the time. He also runs a sand-and-gravel business and owns an industrial park on Route 85 in Montville.
