Ledyard use Taser to subdue Groton man

Ledyard — Police used a Taser to subdue a Groton man early Saturday after he allegedly assaulted his wife and then told a 911 dispatcher to prepare for “suicide by cop” when they responded.

Jason Wiernga, 37, of 55 Crouch St., Groton, was charged with third-degree assault, interfering with police, breach of peace and criminal mischief. His bond was not available, and he was scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court Monday. He was taken by ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, but was not listed as a patient there later Saturday.

Police were called to 32 H Flintlock Drive at 4:35 a.m. Saturday by a woman who reported that her husband had become physically abusive. As Ledyard police officer Eric Bushor was en route, he was told that the man allegedly told the 911 dispatcher to be prepared for “suicide by cop.”

Ledyard police officer Jason Pudvah and Sgt. Kenneth Creutz arrived first, and a police report said Pudvah used a Taser to subdue Wiernga after he refused to obey officers’ commands. A report filed by Pudvah and Creutz was not part of the news release, and police at Troop E in Montville said they had no further information.

The woman had marks on her face and said she had been struck several times but refused medical treatment. Police said two doors in the home were broken down.
