New London firefighters quickly extinguish kitchen fire
New London — Firefighters Monday night quickly extinguished a kitchen fire in an apartment building at 149 Garfield Ave.
Battalion Chief Marc A. Melanson said the fire was reported at 10:36 p.m. He said firefighters had to force their way into a first floor apartment after noticing a strong smell of smoke coming from the dwelling.
When firefighters gained entry into the apartment, the kitchen was on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, he said.
No one was in the apartment.
Additional fire companies were called in to help evacuate tenants from the upper floors. Fire crews worked to ensure that the fire did not spread into the walls.
“They did a good job,” Melanson said. “The fire department stopped it before it got any worse.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
