New London — The New London Homeless Hospitality Center at 19 Jay St. may be closed up to five days as police await results of laboratory tests on a white powder substance that was found in a envelope at the center Monday afternoon.

Police said the envelope and suspicious white powder were collected and sent for further testing to a state laboratory. It could take up to five days for the results.

Charles Boyd, director of operations at the hospitality center, said Tuesday that residents are currently staying at the night shelter at St. James Episcopal Church. He said they will continue to use the night shelter until the Jay Street location reopens. He said there were about 30 people at the shelter Tuesday morning.

The contents of the envelope spilled out onto an individual and onto the floor of the building, police said, prompting a center staff member to evacuate the building.

The manila envelope was addressed to Miguel Ramos, said his brother, Enrique Ramos, but it had no return address.

The call came in around 3:47 p.m. City police and firefighters and the submarine base hazardous materials team responded.

State police, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Emergency Response Unit, Ledge Light Health District and the FBI also responded.

About two hours after the original call, two men donned hazmat suits and entered the building, eventually exiting with a garbage bag full of materials.

A state police officer said on-scene testing of the powder came back negative but that the suspicious powder had to undergo further tests.
