A Sprague man is facing an attempted murder charge after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a screwdriver and kicked her repeatedly with steel-toed boots.

Jon Hoffman, 36, of 46 Bushnell Hollow Road was charged Friday with attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, first-degree strangulation, risk of injury to a minor and interfering with an emergency call.

Police said they received numerous calls from the area of Bushnell Hollow Road with reports that a woman bleeding from the head was knocking on doors asking for help.

When police arrived, they saw a woman lying on the ground. Her face was badly swollen, and she had strangulation marks around her neck, the police report said.

The victim was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment of multiple injuries, including puncture wounds to her head and face and bruises to her face that resulted in both eyes swelling shut. Her nose and jaw were also broken, the report said.

The victim said Hoffman was her boyfriend and that they had a 5-month-old daughter together.

The victim said she was staying at Hoffman's house when the alleged attack occurred. A window in the dwelling had accidentally been broken, and the victim said she told him about it when Hoffman returned home with a friend after having been out.

She said Hoffman started yelling at her and threw a cast-iron grate into the windshield of her Ford Ranger pickup truck. She said she yelled and cursed at him.

The victim told police that she locked the door to the house because she knew he was angry. She said a few minutes later, she heard a window break and heard him coming up the stairs into the bedroom.

The victim said Hoffman started to punch her in the face. When she covered her face, he kicked her with his steel-toed boots, the report said.

While she was on the ground, the victim said, Hoffman grabbed a screwdriver and began to stab her with it.

"While attacking, he continually yelled, 'I'm going to kill you,'" the victim told police.

The victim said she passed out numerous times during the beating.

She said she heard Hoffman, who had gone back downstairs, kick her dog Ginger and heard the dog yelp in pain. The victim said she grabbed her daughter from the playpen and went downstairs to check on the dog.

She thought Hoffman would not touch her since she was holding the infant, the report said.

She said she saw Hoffman kick the dog and punch the dog in the face. The victim opened the side door, and the dog ran out, the report said.

The victim then tried to head for her car, but she said Hoffman came up from behind and continued to attack her while she was holding the infant. The victim fell to the ground and tried to protect her child. She said Hoffman tried to stuff a rock down her throat.

The victim said she pretended to go limp. Hoffman grabbed the infant and took the baby inside the house. The victim said she rolled underneath her truck and hid.

"I hooked my feet onto something and grabbed something to pull myself off the ground so he would not see me," the report said. "I then saw Jon come out of the house carrying a couple of rifles. He looked around for me and when he did not see me (he) yell(ed) 'what the (expletive).'"

He then threw his guns into his truck and drove off, the report said.

As soon as Hoffman left, the victim went inside to search for her daughter.

Police said the baby was not injured.

Police searched for Hoffman. During the course of their search, Hoffman contacted police and arranged to turn himself in.

Hoffman is being held on $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on May 21.
